Feast Day, Saints -

The Holy, Great-Martyr Catherine

Today we celebrate the holy, great-martyr Catherine. St. Catherine was the daughter of King Constus. After his death, Catherine lived with her mother in Alexandria. Her mother was secretly a Christian, and brought Catherine to the faith. The emperor at that time, Emperor Maxentius, offered sacrifices to idols and commanded others to do the same. St. Catherine boldly denounced the offering of sacrifices to idols. Emperor Maxentius was enraged by this and had men come debate Catherine on matters of faith. Catherine won this debates which angered Emperor Maxentius. He put all the men in prison to ready themselves for death. Through St. Catherine's prayers the men all converted to Christianity before their death. St. Catherine herself was put in prison and while there helped convert the emperor's second in command, Porphyrius. Empress Augusta-Vasilissa also converted. St. Catherine's relics repose on Mount Sinai.
