The Holy Martyr Nestor
Today we celebrate the Holy Martyr Nestor. St. Nestor was from Thessolonica and converted to the faith after meeting St. Demetrius.
During this time, Emperor Maximian arranged blood sports and "games" to amuse the people. There was a gladiator, Lyaeus, who Emperor Maximian specifically liked due to his strength and ability to slay those he fought. As Lyaeus defeated more and more people, there was no one who willingly went to fight him, so Emperor Maximian rounded up Christians to face Lyaeus.
St. Nestor was greatly concerned by this and was determined to fight Lyaeus. He visited St. Demetrius in prison to receive his permission which he granted. St. Nestor then volunteered to fight Lyaeus and defeated him. The people watching the fight, knowing that St. Nestor was a follower of St. Demetrius, cried out, "Great is the God of Demetrius!" The death of Lyaeus and the adulation of the crowd angered Emperor Maximian. He promptly ordered the death of Sts. Demetrius and Nestor.
