Elijah, Feast Day, Saints -

The Holy Prophet Elijah

Today we celebrate the feast of the holy prophet Elijah.

The book of Elijah recounts many mighty deeds Elijah did to show the people who God is. He called them to repentance, including King Ahaz and his wife Jezebel, who were corrupting the people with idols and false gods including Baal. Elijah showed the power of God to the people and Baal's followers by calling down the fire of God to consume the altars erected. The book of Elijah recounts him raising a widow's son from the dead, again, showing the mighty power of God.

Elijah is one of the few people in the Bible who were carried up to heaven without dying. He was carried up in a fiery chariot - what a sight!

Elijah's prophecy at times appeared in vain. Even he at times was despondent and cast down, thinking that his work was in vain. But he again turned back to God, remained faithful, and kept going down the path he was called. He shows us the power and might of God and that we are called to be faithful daily.
