Weekly Gospel Reflection

Yesterday we heard about the anointing of Jesus' feet with costly nard. I (Beth) often think about the immense love Mary must have had for Jesus to do such a public act with such an incredibly expensive item. There was so much perfume that St. John says the entire house was filled with the scent! That's a lot of perfume! You can imagine all the murmurings at the table, especially since Judas Iscariot says something out loud about this extraordinary act. But Mary is undeterred. She wants to show her love for Our Lord in a very specific way.

I've often thought that this act may have given strength to Our Lord as he starts his journey towards Jerusalem and ultimately the cross. He knew how hard and painful it will be, the immense suffering he would endure. He knew the whiplash of emotions that would be displayed by the crowds - one day calling him King and several days later calling for his death. But he persisted, out of love for us.

During this Great and Holy Week, let us not forget the immense love the Lord showed for us through his suffering, death, and resurrection. Let us remember that our love is a response to His love for us. And let us find small or large ways to express that love this week.
