Byzantine Basics - What's Their Title?

In the East, what are all fully professed monastic women called?

A. Sister?

B. Mother?

That's right - they're called Mother! This title represents the fruitful union that they have with Christ as part of their monastic calling. When a dokimos is tonsured and becomes a rasophore nun, she receives the title Sister along with her new name. Then finally, when a rasophore makes her life profession she becomes a stravrophore and is called Mother.
