The Holy Prophet Moses

Today we celebrate the feast of the Holy Prophet Moses. There is much one can say about Moses. One of my (Beth) favorite stories of Moses is when God calls him to go talk to Pharaoh and free the Israelites. In my reading of it, Moses has this great revelation shown to him - a bush burning without being consumed - but then when God tells him what he wants Moses' reaction is, "Are you kidding me?" Then Moses proceeds to kindly tell God why this plan is nuts. "Who should I say sent me? Are you sure they've heard of you? Why do you think they'll listen to me? Have you noticed that I'm not a great orator?"
But God knows He's picked the right man. He listens to Moses' concerns, rebuts them kindly and sometimes sternly, and helps Moses see that he is the right man for the job.
We can easily see ourselves in this story. God calls us to small and big things daily and sometimes our reaction is, "Um, clearly you have me confused with someone else." or "I must be imagining this conversation, no way God would ask me to do that." or "I'm not cut out for this!" But God knows who He is calling. He gives us the strength and grace we need to do what He asks. Ultimately it's Him doing the work, not us, we're just the vessel. If God can call Moses to lead the people to the Promised Land, He can work with us.
Let's pray for the strength and courage to do what God is calling us to do, and let's be grateful for the ways God helps us when we think what He's asking is impossible.
