Feast Day, Saints -

The Holy Martyr Plato

Today we celebrate the holy martyr Plato. No, not the philosopher, a whole different person!

Plato was raised Christian and throughout his youth showed great virtue. He did not conceal his faith, but boldly called out idolaters. His boldness caught the attention of the authorities and he was brought before Governor Agrippinus for interrogation and torture. The governor told him he could avoid death by worshipping the idols, to which Plato replied, "There are two deaths, the one temporal and the other eternal; so also are there two lives, one of short duration and the other without end."
Plato was further tortured, then thrown back in prison without food or water. He lasted an additional 18 days after which he was beheaded.
