The Venerable Martyr Anastasia the Roman
Yesterday was the feast day of the Venerable Martyr Anastasia. (Of course the celebration of Divine Liturgy usurped this feast.) She grew up an orphan after being left by her parents at age three, and was raised by an abbess at a monastery named Sophia. Anastasia was instructed in the faith and became a devout Christian. She was known for her asceticism and her beauty.
The Emperor Decius became torturing Christians and demanded Anastasia be brought to him. The abbess Sophia instructed Anastasia in keeping the faith despite being tortured, which gave Anastasia help to endure the pain she suffered at the hands of the Emperor. She was ultimately beheaded after enduring many indignities.
Venerable Martyr Anastasia, pray for us.
