Weekly Gospel Reflection

Yesterday's Gospel reading features the healing of the paralytic. St. Mark writes that there were so many people crowded around Jesus to hear Him preach. So many people were crowded in a house, in all the rooms, in the hallway, out into the front door, out to the corridor surrounding the house. So many people that the paralytic man had to be lowered THROUGH THE ROOF! in order for Jesus to see him.
Perhaps the people were curious. Perhaps they were amazed to hear Him speaking as "one with authority." Perhaps they had come to believe that Jesus was a holy man, perhaps even the Messiah. But, no matter their reason, they crowded around to listen to Him.
Do we crowd into our churches to encounter Jesus? Do we bring our family and friends? Do we tell those we encounter casually about the great mystery among us? How eager are we to go to Divine Liturgy or Mass on Sundays? How eager are we to encounter Jesus in the true presence? How eager are we to encounter the Lord in prayer?
Let us be like the people from Capernaum, eager to hear what the Lord is saying. So eager to hear Him and encounter Him that it is standing room only in our churches.
